In 1976 Sergio Monti produced the first barrique of Cantina Monti’s wine, pressing it with an hand handled hopper and destemming it by hand on a chicken grid. His passion was born at that moment and it made him the president of Ticino's and Switzerland's wine growers, a passion that he also handed down to his sons Delio and Ivo. During the years the winery developed on 4.7 hectars with 9 qualities of vines for 4 labels. It’s located at a 550 meters height with inclinations that do not allow a mechanized production. Cantina Monti focused right away in the production of high quality wines with a low return in vineyard. The "motto" is "respect and rigor": respect for the wine (processing without pumps, using gravity and without filtering for the red wines) and rigor in thinning bunches in the vineyard. Since several years now the winery is managed by Ivo Monti who follows the philosophy handed him down by his father.

THE TEAM

Ivo Monti

After the conclusion of his school parkour the 16 year old decided to take a job on a cargo ship. He already had some experience because of his summer jobs as a deck-hand. He sailed for 10 years and raised from deck-hand to second officer. It was a long experience that brought him to ports and coasts of every ocean in the world. Discovering new realities and perspectives made it so that he still engages in social and humanitarian fields. Even if he loved the see, the earth’s call was always very strong. Never wanting to miss a vintage he sailed in November so that he could return during summer to help in the "young" Cantina Monti. In the late 80's he settled in Ticino and restructured a country house in the Ronchi of Cademario’s vineyard. He’s lived there with his wife and children and opened a financial advisor office with his father. He attended several classes in viticulture and studied at the institute of oenology at the University of Bordeaux and at Beaune. Focusing on the works in the winery he took over the reins of his father Sergio. He now manages the Cantina Monti following the original philosophy.

Sergio Monti

Sergio was the inventor and promoter of Cantina Monti and is now rightfully retired. Before he dived with everything he had and was into the world of wine, learning everything as an autodidact, he was a bank director and financial trustee. He was president of the conference of Swiss wine federations, but also of the Ticino's wine growers federation. From his position he didn’t only witnessed but also influenced an epochal change in the persuit of high quality. He is not only responsible for the excellence of the Cantina Monti’s wine, but also for the engagement that was put into creating the quality standard that all Ticino’s wines follow today.

Delio Monti

Born as an artist he follows this way of life. For years he attended art schools: first the CSIA in Lugano, then he went to Milano and took his diploma in scenography at the Academy of Brera. The thesis he presented was about the Art Brut. He showed how "the accademies of art are the negation of the individual artistic spirit. With a doctrine of imitation of the great protagonists of art's history. This practice only castrates the very impulsion that every future artist could have". He moved to the Lower East Side in New York and lived there for 10 years. He developed his unique drawing in the dark technique and worked in industrial design. As he went back to Ticino he settled in Carona, where he has his atelier togheter with his son. He is responsible for the artistic part of the wine production for the Cantina Monti from the design of new buildings to the wine bottle’s labels.

Giovanni Cavalieri

When he was very young he moved from Puglia (Italy) to Lugano. After a brief period of time he became friends with Delio and Ivo, who shared the passion for winemaking. For a few years he helped the two men in his free time. Finally he decided to make it his profession. He’s an exceptional fisher and is known in the whole canton as the "spazzalago", which means lake cleaner. For years now he has been responsible for the vineyards and knows every Cantina Monti’s secret, that he helped founding.
